Watering New Sod: The First Three Weeks

April 10, 2026 The UNDER SOD™ Team 4 min read

More new lawns die from bad watering than anything else.

Fresh sod has almost no root system, so it can't pull water from the soil yet. For the first few weeks, your watering schedule is its lifeline.

A Simple Schedule

  • Day 1: Water immediately and deeply — about 1 inch — right after laying.
  • Week 1: Keep the sod and the soil beneath it consistently moist; light watering 2–3 times a day in heat.
  • Week 2: Begin tapering — water once a day, a little deeper each time.
  • Week 3: Transition to deep, infrequent watering to drive roots downward.

Test it with a gentle tug after two weeks. If the sod resists, the roots are taking hold and you can stretch the intervals.

The goal

Consistent moisture early, then deeper and less often — that's what builds a drought-resistant lawn.
